The square kilometre array, one of the most ambitious science projects ever conceived would be the world's most powerful radio telescope, thousands of times more capable than the one's available currently.

The SKA could explain the origin of dark matter making up around 90 per cent of the universe and reveal how galaxies and stars were formed.

However, scientists are most excited with its potential to reveal not yet dreamt of things. According to Brian Boyle the leader of the bid to have the array centred in Australia, what was really exciting was the unknown unknowns that the SKA would discover.

He added if we could predict what the SKA would discover we were not being ambitious enough.

He said the SKA would revolutionise our understanding of the universe.

He added when scientists used the word transformational, they literally mean that since it transformed their way of thinking from the current paradigm to something that could not even be contemplated today.
