The special branch of Kerala police, which conducted a probe into the acquisition of assets by relatives of the former chief justice of the Supreme Court, K G Balakrishnan, has sent its report to the union home ministry.

Balakrishnan, now the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), is under pressure to resign following reports that his close relatives have acquired assets disproportionate to their known sources of income over the years.

His son-in-law, P V Sreenijan, had to quit from the primary membership of the Youth Congress following the revelations of details of his acquisitions.

Sreenijan and his wife are alleged to jointly own property worth over Rs40 lakh,  alleged to be a grossly undervalued figure, despite his annual income being a mere Rs25,000 in 2006.

M J Benny, his second son-in-law, is alleged to have prime property worth crores of rupees in Ernakulam, while Balakrishnan's brother, K G Bhaskaran, has also allegedly undervalued the land he bought.

The former chief justice, however, refuses to resign from his post in the NHRC and claims he is not aware of the assets owned by his relatives.
