AP Singh is new chief of CBI

Amar Pratap Singh, a special director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), will take over as the new chief of the agency in place of Ashwani Kumar who retired today.
The appointments panel of the cabinet, headed by prime minister Manmohan Singh, today approved the name of AP Singh as the new director of CBI, official sources said.
Singh, 58, a 1974-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Jharkhand cadre, has previously served as additional director general of the Border Security Force (BSF).
He is also a recipient of the Indian Police Medal and the President's Police Medal.
His appointment comes at a time when the agency is in the middle of investigations into some major scandals, including alleged corruption in the allotment of 2G spectrum, the disorganisation of the Commonwealth Games and the Adarsh housing society scandal in Mumbai.
While the 2G scam forced A Raja to step down as communications minister, the alleged misappropriation of funds in the organisation of the Commonwealth Games forced out Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi and Mumbai's Adarsh housing society scam, involving senior former army officers and civil servants, forced Ashok Chavan to resign as chief minister of Maharashtra.
