India's industrial production down 1.1% in August

Industrial production in the country, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a negative growth of 1.1 per cent in August 2019, quick estimates of IIP, released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation showed.

The cumulative growth for the period April-August 2019 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 2.4 per cent.
Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors registered growth rates of 0.1 per cent, (-) 1.2 per cent and (-) 0.9 per cent in August 2019. The cumulative growth in these three sectors during April-August 2019 stood at 2.8 per cent, 2.1 per cent and 5.0 per cent, respectively.
Fifteen out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown negative growth during August 2019. The industry group ‘motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 23.1 per cent followed by ‘machinery and equipment’ (-) 21.7 per cent and ‘other manufacturing’ (-) 18.0 per cent. ‘
On the other hand, the industry group ‘basic metals’ has shown the highest growth of 11.8 per cent followed by ‘wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials’ 11.3 per cent and ‘wearing apparel’ 10.3 per cent.
Primary goods production grew 1.1 per cent in August while capital goods production declined by 21.0 per cent and intermediate goods production grew 7.0 per cent. Infrastructure/construction goods production declined by 4.5 per cent
Production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growth of (-) 9.1 per cent and 4.1 per cent, respectively.
