Core sector industrial production grows at a slow 2.1% in July

Core sector industrial production in the country grew at 2.1 per cent in July 2019 against a mere 0.2 per cent growth in June 2019, but far slower than the 5.1 per cent growth recorded in May and the 4.7 per cent growth in April this year.

Output in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew 3.0 per cent in the first four months of the current fiscal (April-July 2019-20).
Production of coal, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the general index of industrial production, declined by 1.4 per cent in July 2019.  Cumulative production of coal increased by 1.8 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 4.4 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative oil production declined by 6.2 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 0.5 per cent in July 2019 over July, 2018. Its cumulative index declined by 0.8 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) declined by 0.9 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative refinery output declined by 2.0 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Production of fertilisers (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 1.5 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative production of fertilisers declined by 0.4 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Production of steel (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.6 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative production of steel increased by 10.9 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Production of cement (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) increased by 7.9 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative steel production increased by 2.7 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.2 per cent in July 2019 while cumulative generation of electricity increased by 6.4 per cent during April-July 2019-20.
