Consumer price inflation eases to 10.02 per cent in June

India's consumer price inflation, based on the consumer price index, eased to 10.02 per cent in June, from 10.36 per cent (revised) in the previous month, but continued to remain in double digits.
Provisional figures released by the Central Statistics Office today pegged inflation rates for rural and urban areas at 9.74 per cent and 10.44 per cent, respectively, for June 2012.
Against this, the inflation rates (revised) for rural and urban areas in May 2012 stood at 9.57 per cent and 11.52 per cent, respectively.
The general indices of consumer (retail) prices for rural, urban and combined stood at 120.6, 118.5 and 119.7, respectively.
The decline in the inflation rate for the urban areas in June 2012 is attributed to the higher base of the housing group index for June 2011 as compared to May 2011. Housing group includes items such as house rent, water charges and repair charges. (For compilation of house rent index, rent data are collected from the sample of rented dwellings (distributed over six months) once in six months).
Price data are collected from selected towns by the field operations division of NSSO and from selected villages by the Department of Posts through web portals being maintained by the National Informatics Centre.
