Government to introduce bill to improve living conditions of slum dwellers

A new bill aimed at improving the living conditions of slum dwellers would likely to be introduced in the winter session of parliament later this month, housing and urban poverty alleviation minister Selja said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi yesterday, she said the government also proposed to strengthen slum redevelopment strategy by working to bring about a slum-free India with the assigning of property rights to urban slum dwellers under the Rajiv Awas Yojna.
She added apart from the Property Rights to Slum Dweller Act, the government would also introduce the Real Estate (Regulations and Development) Bill to establish an oversight mechanism to ensure fair practices and accountability.
The bill was aimed at restoring confidence of general public in the real estate sector by instituting transparency and accountability in real estate and housing transactions, Selja said.
She added the real estate and housing sector in India was currently largely unregulated and opaque, with consumers often not able to procure complete information or enforce accountability against builders and developers in the absence of effective regulation.
The draft bill had been put in public domain for comments.
The winter session of parliament is to begin on 22 November and end on 21 December.
