India's forex earnings from tourism rise over 23 per cent to Rs4,678 crore in September

India's foreign exchange earnings from tourism grew 23.2 per cent to Rs4,678 crore during September 2010 from an equivalent of Rs3,798 crore in September 2009, which in turn grew 20.8 per cent from Rs3,143 crore in September 2008.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism during January-September 2010 rose 22.7 per cent to Rs46,115 crore from Rs37,589 crore in January-September 2009, which in turn was up 3.1 per cent from the corresponding period of 2008.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism in dollar terms grew 29.3 per cent to $1.02 billion in September 2010 compared to $785 million during September 2009. It was $689 million in September 2008.

For January-September 2010, forex earnings from tourism grew 30.5 per cent to $10.01 billion with compared to $7.67 billion in the same period in 2009. In January-September 2009, forex earnings from tourism grew at a negative 13.1 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2008.

Foreign tourist arrivals in India grew 12.6 per cent to 3.69 lakh during September 2010 from 3.28 lakh during September 2009, which in turn grew at a negative 4.1 per cent from 3.42 lakh in September 2008.

During the January-September 2010, foreign tourist arrivals grew 10 per cent to 38.36 lakh from 34.88 lakh compared to a negative growth rate of 7.4 per cent during January-September 2009 over the corresponding period of 2008.

Ministry of tourism compiles monthly estimates of foreign tourist arrivals in India and foreign exchange earnings from tourism on the basis of data received from major airports.
