CPI inflation for industrial workers zooms to 11.89 per cent in July

The annual rate of inflation based on the consumer price index increased to 11.89 per cent in July 2009 from 9.29 per cent in June 2009, even as wekly WPI inflation stood at at a little below minus 1. (See: Inflation rate rises to -0.95 per cent).
 
The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers on (base 2001=100) increased by seven points and stood at 160 for the month.

During July 2009, the (CPI-IW) index recorded a maximum increase of 18 points in Nagpur centre, 15 points in Bhopal centre, 14 points each in Kodarma and Lucknow centres and 13 points each in Angul Talcher, Agra, Jamshedpur, Ranchi-Hatia, Kanpur  and Rourkela centres.

The index rose 12 points in two centres, 11 points in four centres, 10 points in four centres, nine points in four centres, eight points in two centres, seven points in five centres, six points in 15 centres, five points in 12 centres, four points in five centres, three points in five centres, two points in four centres and one point in four centres, while in the remaining three centres the index remained stationary.

The maximum increase of 18 points in Nagpur centre is mainly on account of housing index and increase in the prices of arhar dal, vegetable and fruit items, petrol, primary school books, etc. The increase of 15 points in Bhopal centre is mainly due to increase in the prices of wheat, arhar dal, dairy milk, buffalo meat, onion, vegetable and fruit items, sugar, petrol, etc and the housing index. The increase of 14 points each in Kodarma and Lucknow centres is due to arhar dal, dairy milk, vegetable and fruit items, petrol, etc and housing index. The increase of 13 points each in Angul Talcher, Agra, Jamshedpur, Ranchi-Hatia, Kanpur and Rourkela centres is due to higher prices of rice, arhar dal, masur dal, vegetable and fruit items, petrol, etc and the housing index.

The indices in respect of the six major centres are as follows: Ahmedabad 153, Bangalore 169, Chennai 150, Delhi150, Kolkata 157 and Mumbai 160.
