Kharif rice procurement up 1.68 lakh tonnes

Government agencies have procured paddy equivalent to 76.99 lakh tonnes of rice to date in the current kharif marketing season (October 2009-September 2010), as against 75.31 lakh tonnes procured last year, an increase of 1.68 lakh tonnes (or 2 per cent) from the previous kharif season.

Punjab contributed 61.88 lakh tonnes, followed by Haryana with 14.26 lakh tonnes, Kerala 44,900 tonnes, Tamil Nadu 21,300 tonnes and Chandigarh 10,600 tonnes.
