Former telecom minister Sukh Ram who was reported to have gone into a coma yesterday surrendered in a Delhi court and was sent to Tihar jail in a graft case.

Court ordered Sukh Ram, 84, who appeared in the court premises in an ambulance, to be sent to jail in the ambulance itself, to serve his three-year sentence.

Special Judge Sanjeev Jain of the CBI met Sukh Ram, who is accused of showing undue favour to a cable supply company and accepting Rs3 lakh as bribe when he was telecom minister.

Sukh Ram was awarded a three-year jail term in 2002, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Judge Sanjeev Jain said Sukh Ram would be taken to jail in the same ambulance. "As requested by the counsel for the convict, jail authorities are directed to provide necessary medical aid to him in accordance with the norms," he added.

The doctor accompanying Sukh Ram said that the patient was still unconscious, on which the judge allowed the doctor to accompany Sukh Ram till the jail.

The court had directed Sukh Ram to surrender as soon as possible. "He can't go beyond high court's order as the court had asked him to surrender before the trial court," the judge said.

Sukh Ram has been undergoing treatment at a Delhi hospital.
