China’s Huawei building Bangalore campus; big plans for India

Chinese telecom equipment and handset maker Huawei Technologies said on Tuesday it will invest $120-150 million to set up its own R&D campus in Bangalore, which will be its first company-owned research facility outside China.
Work at the proposed site will start mid-July and the campus is expected to be complete by early 2013, Huawei Devices sales director, P Sanjeev, said during a launch function for three new Huawei smartphone models in the city.
''Even though we have R&D centres in countries like Sweden, the UK, Italy, Turkey and the US, we operate there out of leased or rented premises. India will be the first country outside China where we will be having our own campus, accommodating the largest number of R&D engineers outside China,'' he said.
The campus will have one million square feet of built-up area to accommodate 3,500-4,000 people. ''The new centre would take up entire design, feature, battery services, application, and software content of the products,'' Sanjeev said.
He added that the company aims to achieve 15 per cent market share in the handsets market by 2015 and 5-7 per cent by 2013.
The company announced a planned investment of $2 billion in India across all categories. The investment, which will be made over the next five years, will focus on augmenting the Chinese firm's capabilities in local sourcing and increasing headcount, while scaling up its research and development and manufacturing units.
