The head of the UK's biggest employers' organisation, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), says the country's economy was "in a bad place, with confidence evaporating.''

But. the director general of the CBI John Cridland, said, only business could help the UK get out of the "mess".

He added with consumers and government tightening their belts, business investment and exports would help create jobs in Britain.

He was speaking ahead of the annual conference of the industry body on Monday.

He believed that the balance sheets of many UK firms were quite strong and told the BBC that they were not poor, they did not have the confidence to invest.

He added that major impediment to investing was fear over the eurozone debt crisis.
