New Delhi: There is no tsunami threat to the Indian coast, officials said Friday after a massive earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami in Japan. They clarified that tsunami warnings had been issued for east Asian countries and not for those in the Indian Ocean.

In 2007, following the devastating 2004 tsunami, India had set up a tsunami warning centre run by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, under the ministry of earth sciences.

A massive earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale hit Japan early Friday, triggering a tsunami as high as 10 metres that slammed into north east Japan's coastal areas.

Tsunami alerts have now been issued for the entire Pacific coast, including Philippines, Taiwan, Guam and Russia as well as islands in the Pacific and Indonesia.
