Prime minister Manmohan Singh on Friday cautioned that the global economic recovery was "still fragile and uneven." He made the statement as he left to attend the G-20 summit in Toronto, Canada.

The theme of the summit is `Recovery and the New Beginning'.

While the coordinated policy actions taken by the G 20 since the first summit in Washington in November 2008 have contributed to global economic recovery, he said, leaders have to be conscious that the recovery is still fragile and uneven.

With concerns growing over the still expansionary fiscal policies, he asked world leaders to calibrate exit strategies.

"We need investment and capital flows, as well as an open and rule-based trading system that does not succumb to protectionist tendencies," Singh said in a departure statement in New Delhi.

During the two-day summit beginning tomorrow, he will also have talks with US President Barack Obama and other world leaders.
