Notices fly in both houses over Ishrat Jahan, other issues

02 Mar 2016

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bhupender Yadav this morning gave a calling attention notice in the Rajya Sabha on developments in Ishrat Jahan 'encounter' case.

Following former undersecretary for internal security at the ministry of home affairs R V S Mani's allegation about former home minister P Chidamabaram's role in changing affidavits on the case, the issue is likely to cause an uproar in both houses.

R V S Mani's lawyer Kanwar B B Singh today questioned Chidambaram's silence in the Ishrat Jahan case, saying that the report of alleged abuse was informed of during the UPA Government's rule.

"Mani had written to the senior officers about the torture by Satish Verma (CBI Officer) during investigation. It is not that these things have been revealed by Mani now. These were informed during the UPA Government's rule. Why did the then home minister keep mum on the affidavit issue? When we filed two affidavit he received two letters threatening his life," Singh said.

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi will chair a strategy meeting with the senior leaders of the party today as the BJP gave a breach-of-privilege notice in the Lok Sabha against the Congress's chief whip Jyotiraditya Scindia for having made 'defamatory' remarks against Union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya.

Other issues
Earlier, the Congress had also moved a breach-of-privilege motion against Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani alleging that she had misled the house with her statement over Hyderabad scholar Rohith Vemula's suicide.

Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha plunged into ruckus amidst repeated adjournments on Tuesday, following the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) members trooping into well, demanding action against P Chidambaram's son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis case.

They alleged that Karti has built a business empire in different parts of the country. The AIADMK is the third largest party with 37 MPs in the Lok Sabha, after BJP's 280 and Congress' 45.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to speak in the Lok Sabha later today.
