IVRCL announces the completion of sea water desalination plant at Minjur

IVRCL today announced the completion of the sea water desalination plant at Minjur, near Chennai.

The desalination plant, inaugurated by Tamil Nadu chief minister D M Karunanidhi today, is located at a 60-acre plot at Kattupalli village, Ponneri taluka, and has been set up with the capacity to supply 100 million litres of potable water per day.

Set up with an investment of Rs600 crore, this initiative will enable supply of potable drinking water to the Chennai city.

The bulk water purchase agreement was signed between Chennai Water Desalination Limited (CWDL), a special purpose vehicle between IVRCL Infrastructures & Project Ltd. and a consortium partner Befesa Agua, Spain, and Chennai Metrowater and Sewerage Supply Board (CMWSSB) on the 13th September, 2005.

CWDL was awarded the project of detailed design, engineering, financing, procurement, construction, operation.

S Ramachandran, managing director, IVRCL Assets & Holdings Ltd, and director, CWDL said, "We are happy to announce the completion of the sea water desalination plant at Minjur and help bridge the gap between demand and supply of safe drinking water in the city through our project."

As part of the agreement, CWDL will maintain and operate the plant for a period of 25 years from the date of commercial operation.
