I&B ministry serves show cause notice to three channels
16 Aug 2008
Three television channels have been issued a showcause notice by the government for violating the programme code. Music channel MTV has been issued a notice ''denigration'' of women in its hugely popular reality show 'Splitsvilla'. The programme features 20 teenage girls seeking the attention of two boys who are the judges in the reality show and must choose between the girls.
The ministry of information & broadcasting took cognisance of a complaint about the episode telecast on 12 July and issued a notice to the channel demanding an explanation within 15 days.
The other two channels that received showcause notices are IBN-7 and Headlines Today.
IBN-7 aired a programme on 27 June in which Lord Ram and Hanuman had appeared in the form of a ball of fire in a village called Nero, 200km from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
An explanation has been sought as to why the channel was ''encouraging superstition''.
Headlines Today's programme on 6 July on the bikini completing 62 years was found to be ''objectionable and indecent''.
The channel had, according to the complaint, featured pictures of models in bikinis and photographs of topless women.
Following up with public complaints earlier, the ministry has banned channels like FTV and AXN for a short period last year.
