Hyderabad: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has said that though it has officially inaugurated the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on 16 March 2008, the launch of commercial operations will be delayed till next week.

According to GHIAL, the new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi, in the presence of chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy and the minister of civil aviation Praful Patel.

Though the new international airport is ready in all aspects, a GHIAL statement says, "we understand that some airlines have approached the ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) seeking more time to begin operation from RGIA. Acceding to their requests, MoCA has advised us to begin operations in a few days".

GHIAL says that it will soon intimate a new date for start of operations.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad's Begumpet airport will continue to handle services until then.
