Mumbai airport is likely to get a new domestic terminal at Santa Cruz —Terminal 1C — by the end of December 2008. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the joint-venture company modernising the airport, also has plans to demolish the present Terminal 1B, even though it has excellent facilities and is fairly new.

But that's in the future. For now, MIAL plans to construct Terminal 1C to connect the existing two terminals 1A and 1B. At Rs200 crore, Terminal 1C will house a luxury hotel and have large commercial areas above the passenger area. These will cost more, as the amount is only for the construction of the terminal building.

Once all domestic operations are shifted to a brand new integrated passenger terminal that will come up on the Sahar side, MIAL plans to convert Terminal 1C into a low-cost terminal. That, probably, is when it will demolish Terminal 1B, which the company says is causing "operational limitations" to its modernisation plans.
