New Delhi: Gasohol, which is petrol mixed with 5 per cent ethanol, will be sold in nine states and four union territories from 1 January 2003. The sale of gasohol will be mandatory in these areas.

The states where the 2003-norm will apply are Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

It will also be mandatory in the union territories of Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Pondicherry.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Ram Naik says this decision will bring down oil import, besides benefiting sugarcane growers in these states and union territories. The sale of 5-kg LPG cylinders will be launched on 16 August 2002 from Shimla.

The small-sized cylinder is targeted at people living in the hilly terrains, far-flung areas and the economically weaker sections to enable easier transportation since the conventional cylinder is 30 kg. The deposit for a 5-kg cylinder will be Rs 350 per piece.
