Mysuru ranked India’s cleanest city, Dhanbad adjudged dirtiest

Mysuru has emerged as the cleanest city in India in a survey ranking of 73 cities across the country. Other cities in the top five bracket with high levels of sanitation and cleanliness include Chandigarh, Tiruchirapalli, Delhi (NDMC) and Vishakapatnam.

As per the Swachh Survekshan results announced by the government today, ?Dhanbad in Bihar is the dirtiest city among all 73 cities assessed under the cleanliness survey.

Of the 73 cities surveyed for cleanliness, 15 have emerged as leaders, 20 as aspiring leaders, 18 cities needing acceleration and 20 as slow movers based on the marks scored by each of them in the 'Swachh Survekshan-2016' survey.

As per the results of the survey announced by urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu today, 15 cities scored more than 70 per cent of the total marks of 2,000 and were categorised as leaders, 20 cities with scores in the range of 60-70 per cent are aspiring leaders, those with scores in the range of 50-60 per cent are the cities who need to accelerate their efforts and cities who scored below 50 per cent are named slow movers who need to work harder to improve santiation.

Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai were grouped in `leader cities' in results of the Swachh Survekshan, which is a cleanliness monitor based on extensive surveys across Indian cities carried out by Quality Council of India (QCI).

The Aspiring Leaders category has Panaji as leader of the pack while Bihar's capital Patna is grouped among laggards.

Best performing city in Information, Education and Behaviour Change Communication (IEBC) activity was Tiruchirappalli.

The best performing city in North East was Gangtok and Greater Mumbai got the Best Performing city among Mega Cities.

Speaking on the occasion urban development minister M VenkaiahNaidu said, "To make progress we should know where we stand and what next needs to be done."

"I am happy that the change of mind is happening and should happen more," he added.

The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.

The leader cities among the surveyed included: Mysuru, Chadigarh, Tiruchirapalli, New Delhi, Municipal council, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok, Pimprichindwad, Greater Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumabi, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Imphal,
              
Aspiring leaders included Panaji, Thane, Coimbattore, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhopal, Allahabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Madurai, Shimla, Lucknow, Jaipur, Gwalior, Nashik, Warangal, Agartala, Ludhiana and Vasai-Virar.

The cities found to be needing accelerated development included: Chennai, Gurgaon, Bengaluru, South Muncipal Corporation of Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Aizawl, Gandhinagar, North MCD, Kozhikode, Kanpur, Durg, Agra, Srinagar, Amritsar, Guwahati, Faridabad, East MCD and Shillong.

Slow movers included: Hubbali-Dharwad (Karnataka), Kochi, Aurangabad, Jodhpur, Kota, Cuttack, Kohima, Dehradun, Ranchi, Jabalpur, Kalyan Dombivili (Maharashtra), Varanasi, Jamshedpur, Ghaziabad, Raipur, Meerut, Patna, Itanagar, Asansol and Dhanbad.
