The number of Spain's unemployed grew by nearly 80,000 last month to 4.7 million people, authorities said yesterday.

Unemployment was up by 11.32 per cent during the 12 months that ended 30 September, according to the employment and social security ministry, which released a report based on registrations at government employment offices.

Data from the workforce survey indicated that over 5.6 million Spanish residents were  without jobs, which translated into an unemployment rate of 24.63 per cent, the highest in the 27-member EU.

The jobless rate among the under-25 population of Spain is 53 per cent.

The secretary of state for employment, Engracia Hidalgo, pointed out that the Spanish economy remained in recession and was expected to contract 1.5 per cent this year.

September is the time of entry for recent graduates  into the Spanish job market.
