Cracking down on male passengers barging into coaches meant exclusively for ladies, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to impose a fine of Rs200 on men found travelling in ladies' coaches from Tuesday, and will deploy mobile squads to check this nuisance.

Introduced earlier this month, the ladies coaches were started on an experimental basis by the DMRC. On several stretches, despite warnings and messages posted by the DMRC, volunteers and guards have to be posted to ensure that the men do not come barging in. Now, the DMRC has decided to go further and penalise violators.

The Delhi Metro had decided to reserve the first coach of every train for ladies with effect from 2 October. About one-fourth of the total passengers travelling on the Delhi Metro are women.

Children up to 12 years accompanied by lady passengers are also allowed to travel in the reserved ladies coach.

''Every mobile squad will consist of four to five persons, including security personnel. So far, mobile squads have imposed penalty on 8,195 passengers for committing various offences such as defacing metro property, drunkenness, nuisance and spitting in the metro between 9 November 2008 and September this year. The amount collected so far is Rs16.41 lakh,'' a DMRC spokesperson said.
