Major ports record 5.13% growth in cargo handling during April-August

The Major ports in India handled a combined 288.38 million tonnes of cargo during the period April-August 2018 against 274.32 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year, recording a growth of 5.13 per cent.

For the April-August 2018 period, nine ports - Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal - registered growth in traffic.
The highest growth in cargo handling was recorded by Kamarajar Port (17.24 per cent), followed by Deendayal Port (11.16 per cent), Paradip (10.93 per cent), Cochin (10.13 per cent) and Kolkata (9.01 per cent).
Kamarajar Port saw an increase in miscellaneous cargo (24.98 per cent), other liquids (20.45 per cent), POL (13.82 per cent) and thermal and steam coal (8.8 per cent).
In Kolkata Port, overall growth in cargo handling was 9.01 per cent. Kolkata Dock System (KDS) recorded traffic growth of 6.54 per cent, whereas Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) recorde a growth of 10.13 per cent.
During the period April to August 2018, Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled the highest volume of traffic of 48.9 million tonnes (a share of 16.95 per cent), followed by Paradip with 44.79 million tonnes (15.53 per cent share), JNPT with 28.99 million tonnes (10.05 per cent share), Visakhapatnam with 26.94 million tonnes (9.34 per cent share), Kolkata (Including Haldia) with 25.44 million tonnes (8.82 per cent share). 
Together, these ports handled around 61 per cent of Major Port traffic.
