India’s core sector industrial production up 8.4% in April

Core sector industrial production in the country increased by 8.4 per cent year-on-year in April 2022 on the back of an increase in the production of coal, electricity, refinery products, fertilizers, cement and natural gas, provisional figures released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) showed.
The combined index of the eight core sector industries, viz, coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity, having 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), recorded a growth of 10.4 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Final growth rate of the index of the eight core sector industries for January 2022 now stands revised to 4.0 per cent from its provisional level of 3.7 per cent.
The production of coal, electricity, refinery products, fertilisers, cement and natural gas industries increased in April 2022 over the corresponding period last year.
Within the core sector, production of coal which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the index, increased by 28.8 per cent in April 2022. Cumulative production of coal increased by 8.5 per cent during April-March 2021-22 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent) declined by 0.9 per cent in April 2022 while cumulative production of crude oil declined by 2.6 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent) increased by 6.4 per cent in April 2022 while its cumulative production increased by 19.2 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Production of petroleum refinery products (weight of 28.04 per cent) increased by 9.2 per cent in April 2022 while its cumulative production index increased by 8.9 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Production of fertilisers (weight of 2.63 per cent) increased by 8.7 per cent in April 2022 while its cumulative production increased by 0.7 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Production of steel (weight of 17.92 per cent) declined by 0.7 per cent in April while its cumulative production increased by 17.1 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Production of cement (weight of 5.37 per cent) increased by 8.0 per cent in April while cumulative cement production increased by 20.8 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent) increased by 10.7 per cent in April 2022 while cumulative generation increased by 8.0 per cent during April-March 2021-22.
