Core sector output down 0.8% in September as Covid effects start waning

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in September 2020 against an 8.5 per cent decline in August, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.
Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 14.9 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Final growth rate of the eight core industries for June 2020 stands revised to (-) 12.4 per cent.
Coal production, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the core sector production index, increased by 21.2 per cent in September 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 6.1 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent) declined by 6.0 per cent in September 2020 while cumulative production of crude oil declined by 6.1 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent) declined by 10.6 per cent in September 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 13.2 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent) declined by9.5 per cent in September 2020 while cumulative refinery throughput declined by 16.3 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent) declined by 0.3 per cent in September2020 while cumulative fertiliser production increased by 3.7 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent) increased by 0.9 per cent in September 2020 while cumulative steel production declined by 26.7 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent) declined by 3.5 per cent in September 202 while cumulative cement production declined by 25.1 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent) increased by 3.7 per cent in September 2020 while cumulative generation of electricity declined by 8.2 per cent during April-September 2020-21.
