The Indian government has goofed up on the crucial economic data, yet again, this time on wrong estimates of cement production.

Just within hours of releasing the figures for core industries, the government revised the output growth to 3.8 per cent from 4.6 per cent as it wrongly estimated cement production. The cement output was wrongly estimated at 22.1 per cent, compared with the actual 11.3 per cent.

The commerce and Industry ministry on Saturday initiated an internal enquiry on the goof up.

"We have started an internal exercise to find out the reasons of problems in the data," a ministry official said

The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) and department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) are the ones that collate the data.

The eight core industries - coal, crude oil, natural gas, fertilisers, petroleum and refinery products, electricity, cement and finished steel - have a weight of 37.9 per cent in the index of industrial production (IIP).
