Armed with the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has proposed the setting up of a metro rail coach factory on the land abandoned Tata Motors.

The coach factory, proposed to be set up jointly by the Railways, the Steel Authority of India Ltd and the West Bengal government, will come up at the 600 acre land left after return of 400 acres to unwilling farmers of Singur.

"I will be happy if Railways, SAIL and the state government jointly set up the coach factory at Singur on 600 acres. We are committed to return the remaining 400 acres to the unwilling farmers," chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.

SAIL, she said, has given a letter to the state government expressing interest in setting up a coach factory for the metro rail.

"I had made a provision for a metro rail coach factory in the Railway Budget when I was the railway minister," she said, adding that she had also discussed the issue with the present railway minister Dinesh Trivedi.

"The Railways appear to be interested in a metro coach factory to be set up on the land at Singur," she said, adding that the Railways would send a formal letter soon.
