The union government today announced a 15-day relief for income tax payers in view of the disturbance caused by floods in different parts of the country.

The last date for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2010-11 has been extended from 30 September to 15 October, according to an official statement from New Delhi.

"The due date has been extended in view of disturbance to general life caused by floods," it said.

Last week, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the due date of filing of returns of income for all categories of cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 30 November because of the law and order problems in the state.

According to the statement, the extended date for filing returns in Jammu and Kashmir will remain the same.
