Consumer price inflation for industrial workers dips to 11.49 per cent in October

The annual rate of inflation for industrial workers based on the all-India consumer price index (CPI-IW) stood lower at 11.49 per cent in October 2009 against 11.64 per cent in September.

The consumer price index for industrial workers has steadily been declining since it touched a high of 11.89 per cent in July this year. There has, however, been no dent in the rising prices of essential consumer items, including food.
    
The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (base 2001=100) increased by two points and stood at 165 in October 2009.

During the month, the index recorded the maximum increase of seven points each in Siliguri and Darjeeling centres, six points each in Surat and Munger-Jamalpur centres, five points each in Lucknow, Ranchi-Hatia, Godavarikhani, Vododara, Asansol, Ajmer and  Warrangal centres, four points each in five centres, three points each in 19 centres, two points each in 20 centres and one point each in 14 centres.

The index decreased by one point in Chhindwara centre, while in the remaining eight centres the index remained stationary.

The maximum increase of seven points in Siliguri centre has mainly been on account of increase in the prices of rice, wheat atta, urd dal, onion, vegetable items, sugar, tea leaf, etc. Similarly, the increase of seven points in the Darjeeling centre was due mainly to increase in the prices of rice, wheat atta, urad dal, moong dal, pork, fish (dry), onion, vegetable items, sugar etc.

The increase of six points in Surat centre has been due to higher prices of rice, wheat, wheat atta, moong (whole), dairy milk, onion, vegetable items, kerosene, trouser cloth (synthetic) etc. In the Mongher-Jamalpur centre the increase of six points was due to higher prices of rice, milk (buffalo), onion, vegetable items, etc.

However, the decrease of one point in Chhindwara centre was mainly due to lower prices of rice, vegetable items, clothing Items etc.

The indices in respect of the six major centres were as follows : Ahmedabad - 158, Bangalore - 173, Chennai - 154, Delhi - 152,  Kolkata - 167, Mumbai - 164.
