Area under foodgrains in India rises to over 48.7 million hectares

The total area under foodgrains in the country stood higher at 48.71 million hectares as of 7 January 2011, against 47.72 million hectares at the same period of the previous year.

As per data received from states, the area under wheat was up 7.2 lakh hectares while the area under pulses was up 8.4 lakh hectares.

As of 7 January 2011, the area under wheat in the country stood at 28.12 million hectares, against 27.41 million hectares during the same period of the previous year.

The area under rice was, however, lower at 5.50 lakh hectares, against 7.32 lakh hectares as of 7 January 2010.

The area under jowar was also lower at 4.09 million hectares, against 4.45 million hectares during the same period of the previous year.

Maize was sown over 9.91 lakh hectares as of 7 January 2011, against 1.03 million hectares during the same period of the previous year.
