The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kept up its protests as it demanded today that prime minister Manmohan Singh's resign as the parliament was adjourned till 12 noon as soon as the members met.

The BJP kept pressing for the resignation of the prime minister over coal block allocations, after which the presiding officers of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha adjourned the houses.

Singh meanwhile, spoke to president Pranab Mukherjee as he sought to put an end to the logjam in the parliamenteven as there were no apparent signs of resolution of the deadlock.

Commentators say after two weeks of paralysis, the coalgate issue in parliament would see even the last week of monsoon session of parliament wiped out.

The BJP, which which has adamantly kept up its demand for the resignation of prime minister in the wake of the CAG report on coal block allocations has been unrelenting in its campaign.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi reached out to leader of opposition Sushma Swaraj in bid to end the logjam, but in a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, Swaraj said, the government should announce cancellation of the controversial coal block allocations and order an independent inquiry.
