A Special Investigative Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police will probe the suspected murder of senior journalist KJ Singh and his mother.

Singh and his 92-year-old mother Gurcharan Kaur, were found dead at their residence in Mohali earlier in the day. Singh was found with his throat slit, while his mother was likely strangulated in their Phase 3B2 home.

"There were injury marks on their necks," Mohali deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Alam Vijay Singh said.

Responding swiftly to the murders, Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh called up state DGP Suresh Arora to set up a SIT for a thorough investigation into the case. IG (Crime), under whom the SIT will function, has been asked to ensure investigation into all leads and the identification and apprehending of the culprits at the earliest.

Singh, who was in his sixties, had worked with many news organisations, including the Indian Express, The Tribune and The Times of India in Chandigarh.

"I condemn ghastly murder of senior journalist KJ Singh and his mother at Mohali. Urge police to nab perpetrators immediately," tweeted senior Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The maid who worked at the house, was the first to notice the murder and sounded out the neighbours, who called the police.

Among the belongings found missing are Singh's Ford Ikon car an LCD, but the gold chains worn by the victims were found intact.

The brutal double murder appeared to have been committed last night after the maid left the place. It was only this afternoon that the double murder was discovered.

An official spokesperson said the chief minister has directed the police to strengthen security in the area, and ensure the safety and security of the common citizens of the state.
