Moscow: Russia will make first deliveries of Mi-17V-5 helicopters to India from March next year. These multi-utility choppers can also be configured to assume a gunship role in high altitude areas.

India ordered 80 of these multi-utility helicopters in December 2008 in a deal worth more than $1.345 billion. The fresh deliveries, which are to be completed by 2015, will boost the Indian Air Force's (IAF) medium haul helicopter strength from the current 52 to 132.

According to its manufacturers, Kazan Helicopters, the helicopters are equipped with new flight and navigation systems and can be utilised for special transport operations like air lifting troops and equipment, search and rescue operations, casualty evacuation and as helicopter gunships.

The new deliveries will replace some of IAF's existing force of Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters.

Meanwhile, India has issued a $100 million tender for up-gradation of its existing fleet of Mi-17 helicopters. The upgrade will incorporate state-of-the-art LCD screens, touch screens and other equipment.

The upgrades are intended to help the pilot to focus on flying and lessen the workload inside the cockpit.
