Around $30 billion will need to be invested to develop various airports in the country, according to a study by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. The consultancy says that this investment will be over and above the $9 billion that government officials have said is likely to be spent over the next four-and-a-half years by the Airports Authority of India and private developers.

The study also says that ten Indian cities, including the six metros, would need another airport by 2020. While nine of these cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad and Amritsar will need a second airport, in the case of Mumbai, with a second airport already coming up, there would be need for a third airport.

According to the study, the Mumbai and Delhi airports, which already handle more than 20 million passengers per annum will be saturated by 2010, with passenger traffic peaking at 25-30 million in Mumbai and 30-40 million in Delhi.

The study also points out that existing airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad will reach saturation point in 2008, with traffic touching 10 million, which is when the two greenfield airports in these cities are expected to become operational.

Kolkata airport, the study says, which already handles more than 5 million passengers, will need a second airport by 2010, in spite of the proposed modernisation of the existing airport by the Airport Authority of India.

As for non-metros, the study says that most are expected to reach saturation point by 2015, even as metros become saturated by 2010.
