DGCA sacks top safety officer
15 Sep 2011
New Delhi: Hard on the heels of a report emerging that the office of India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), had destroyed records related to safety inspections and incidents comes the news that the highest-ranking safety officer in that office has been relieved of his duties. Apparently, the charge is complacency in handling the safety department.
According to senior government sources, the director general of civil aviation, Bharat Bhushan, has relieved Bir Singh Rai, deputy director general of the Directorate of Air Safety, from his duties with immediate effect.
Lalit Gupta, deputy director general of the aircraft engineering directorate in DGCA, has been given the additional portfolio of the air safety department.
Rai was heading the safety department since 2010.
The DGCA has confirmed the development without comment.
The DGCA has also called a meeting of local airline executives this week to review action taken on various aircraft-related incidents and accidents and the remedial measures adopted.
