Ten airlines operating out of Hong Kong to hike fuel surcharge
27 May 2008
Hong Kong: Hong Kong Special Administration Region's (SAR) Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has granted permission to 13 airlines, local and international, to either maintain, or raise, fuel surcharges on passenger tickets for the months of June and July.
Of the 13 airlines, 10 airlines have said that they propose to levy about 37% higher fuel surcharges in the June-July period. Flag carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, for example, will hike surcharge for most of the short-haul flights to HK$171, which is up 36.8% from the current HK$125. It also said that surcharge for long-haul flights will rise from HK$518 to HK$710.
All Nippon Airways, Nepal Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines have said that they propose to retain the existing fuel surcharge.
The price of crude oil has climbed more than 50% from the beginning of the year, and according to the CAD the proposed hike in fuel surcharge is expected to partly offset these costs.
