Siliguri: Bagdogra airport would be upgraded into an international airport by 2008, Union civil aviation minister, Praful Patel, told reporters here yesterday.

"From the point of view of tourism and the region's proximity with three neighbouring countries, the Bagdogra airport attains a special significance. We would soon initiate the internationalisation process of the airport, and I hope, that by 2008 we would be able to upgrade Bagdogra into an international airport," Patel, said.

He added that as the first step towards internationalisation, customs and immigration offices would be set up at the Bagdogra airport early next year.

"Once the airport is augmented to a 'customs airport', awarding the international status wouldn't take much of a time," he said.
