India's low-cost air travel pioneer Capt GR Gopinath is at it again – sniffing out business opportunities where none exist, with his Deccan Charters Ltd planning to run chartered flights to inadequately connected airports in Gujarat.

Deccan has signed an agreement with the state government to fly to Porbandar, Kandla, Jamnagar, Surat, Bhavnagar, Bhuj and Ahmedabad, said Capt Gopinath, managing director of Deccan Charters.

''We will be connecting smaller airports to Ahmedabad and other airports. We will start these flights shortly using smaller planes,'' he said.

Capt Gopinath launched India's first low-fare carrier, Air Deccan, in 2003 helping millions of Indians to take to the skies for the first time. He sold out this operation to Kingfisher Airlines in 2007, which rebranded the service as Kingfisher Red.

According to state government officials the state has a large number of airports, many of which are connected to Mumbai in Maharashtra though not to other parts of the state.

According to these officials, the agreement with Deccan Charters would help strengthen inter-connectivity by air in the state, with Surat and Ahmedabad serving as hubs.
