In a ''first of its kind'' deal eight US airlines operating at Los Angeles International have signed a multi-year deal for the supply of a renewable synthetic diesel fuel for use in ground service equipment.

The fuel is manufactured by Rentech, a Los Angeles-based fuel manufacturer.

The contract calls for the supply of 1.5 million gallons per year, beginning in late 2012. This is when the Rialto Renewable Energy Center, that will produce the RenDiesel fuel, is scheduled to enter service.

The contract includes fuel service company, Aircraft Service International Group (ASIG).

The participating carriers are Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, UPS Airlines and US Airways.

Rentech said addition of other airlines is possible under its deal with ASIG.
