New Delhi: In stepped up efforts to stem continuing losses Indian domestic carriers slashed  more than 2,000 weekly flights in July, or almost 20 per cent of the number they operate. Amongst other measures, high operating costs and falling passenger demand has forced airlines to cut capacity as well.

Over the previous years, airlines had chased market share at the expense of profits and the domestic aviation industry had grown by nearly 33% in 2007 and 41% the year before. Passenger growth has shrunk to a modest 7.5% as compared to the year-ago period.

For the first time in four years, demand in June, the last month for which data has been released, shrank by 3.8 per cent.

Data from the ministry of civil aviation shows that as compared to the 10,922 domestic departures every week in March this year, carriers reduced flights to 8,778 in July, marking a total of 2,144 cancellations.

According to aviation ministry officials, with these massive cancellations the industry has slipped back to the traffic flow of 2005 in terms of the numbers of flights offered.
