Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has teamed up with Nvidia to establish a new research hub in the United Arab Emirates dedicated to artificial intelligence and robotics. The lab, officially unveiled on Monday, marks Nvidia’s first AI Technology Center in the Middle East—a milestone that underscores both the region’s growing role in advanced technology and Nvidia’s expanding global footprint.

The center will blend TII’s multidisciplinary expertise with Nvidia’s powerful AI models and computing platforms, technologies that are currently driving rapid progress in machine learning and automation worldwide. As part of the collaboration, TII will gain access to advanced edge GPU chips to accelerate its robotics research, including projects in humanoid design, four-legged robots, and robotic arms.

Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, highlighted the significance of Nvidia’s Thor chip for the institute’s work. She explained that TII will begin using the chip, stating that “it is a chip that enables advanced robotic systems development” and noting its potential to push forward highly complex automation systems.

Strengthening UAE’s AI Ambitions

The UAE has been positioning itself as a serious global contender in artificial intelligence, channeling billions of dollars into initiatives designed to diversify its economy beyond oil. TII, the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, is at the heart of these efforts, using partnerships with major U.S. tech players to secure access to critical infrastructure and computing power.

The collaboration also comes amid wider geopolitical considerations. The UAE previously signed an agreement with U.S. companies to develop one of the world’s largest data center hubs in Abu Dhabi, using Nvidia’s most advanced chips. That deal, however, remains under review due to security concerns tied to the UAE’s growing ties with China.

Aaraj emphasized that TII’s relationship with Nvidia is not new, pointing out that the institute has already used the company’s hardware to train its own large language models. Talks for the joint lab began roughly a year ago, and the hub will house researchers from both organizations, with additional hires planned to expand its capabilities.

Summary:

Nvidia’s partnership with Abu Dhabi’s TII marks the launch of the company’s first AI and robotics lab in the Middle East. The initiative gives TII access to cutting-edge GPU technology, including Nvidia’s Thor chip, to accelerate work on humanoids and advanced robotics. For the UAE, the move strengthens its ambitions to become a global AI leader while deepening its ties with U.S. technology firms, even as geopolitical tensions add complexity to future collaborations.
