Maqbool Fida HusainLondon: Renowned Indian artist, Maqbool Fida Husain, passed away in a London hospital on Thursday. According to reports, the artist died of a heart attack at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

He was 95.

The Royal Brompton is a specialist in heart and lung diseases.

Husain had been living in a self-imposed exile since 2006 after some of his paintings of Hindu deities offended public sentiment and led to threats on his life.

What cannot be disputed is his seminal contribution to what is loosely termed as 'modern art' in India. Not only a widely admired painter at home, he virtually put Indian art on the global stage on his own.

Husain joined the Progressive Artists' Group, founded by Francis Newton Souza in 1947. This was a group of young artists who wished to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal school of art and kick-started the Indian avant-garde movement.
