New phishing scam hits Netflix subscribers

Netflix subscribers should take note that they may end up being the target of a new email scam as they watched the latest movies.

Mailguard, a cloud and web security provider had flagged the email scam last week. The phishing email looks like it came straight from Netflix itself, with the use of the company logo and more and is much more sophisticated than the last Netflix email phishing attempt.

The email informs subscribers that their account has been suspended due to problems with the billing on their account. All they need to do is to sign back in, update your credit card information, and restart their account.

Subscribers may find everything about the scam to be pretty convincing, especially people who do not pay much attention to the corresponding URLs of a page there are on, which is the big telltale sign they may miss.

The scam also uses images of Netflix shows like The Crown which lend it an air of authenticity.

According to deadline.com, more than 100 million subscribers have been targeted by the scam thus far and it is not known as to how those emails were obtained.

In a statement to Mashable, Netflix said, "We take the security of our members' accounts seriously and Netflix employs numerous proactive measures to detect fraudulent activity to keep the Netflix service and our members' accounts secure. Unfortunately, scams are common on the internet and target popular brands such as Netflix and other companies with large customer bases to lure users into giving out personal information.

The email is sent under the subject line ''Your suspension notification'' and features a link to take the subscriber to a fake Netflix page which requires their log-in information. They are also asked their credit card number, according to Mailguard.
