Maharashtra tops in internet readiness survey of states

Maharashtra has taken the top spot in the ranking of states in terms of overall internet readiness, followed by Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, according to a report released in New Delhi yesterday.

The report, which measured internet readiness factored in components like e-infrastructure index, e-participation index, IT-services and e-governance index was published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Indicus Analytics.

The report titled Index of Internet Readiness of Indian States, analysed data in all spheres on of the IT sector since 2012. Internet readiness index is a composite index on components was published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Indicus Analytics.

Among the smaller states, Delhi took the top spot in terms of internet readiness index, followed by Puducherry and Goa.

As the northeastern states do not figure in the top three, even in the small states list, the report states,  ''Therefore, much more needs to be done in the form of investment and infrastructure development in the region,'' the report stated.

Among Union Territories, Chandigarh ranks No1 in internet readiness.

The report was compiled to help business and governments leverage the strength of internet and to formulate policy measures where improvements were required.

''Given the rapid advancement in e-services and e-commerce, it is essential to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the states,'' the report said.

The survey findings are expected to help  Maharashtra's investment pitch ahead of the Make in India Summit, set to kick-off this week in Mumbai.

Maharashtra looks to enter into deals with IT companies interested in setting up their facilities in the state.

"Developed IT infrastructure, skilled human resource, success of e-governance initiatives and participation of the common mass in the same, and encouraging steps were taken by the government, such as concessions and benefits for opening IT hubs, are a few of the positive factors that have helped Maharashtra enhance its internet readiness in a significant way," the report said.
