Aakash, world's cheapest tablet may get cheaper: report

Aakash, the world's cheapest tablet, launched by Datawind, might seeing a further dip in prices, even as it will continue adding features and applications every six months.
According to The Economic Times, at present, the internet access-cum-computing device that would be available in the market from January onwards, is priced at Rs3,000 a piece.
It is currently being rolled out by the government to targeted students across the country at a subsidised price of about Rs1,500.
Aakash was launched on 5 October 2001 to usher in a digital revolution and further the government's drive towards digital literacy. (See: India launches digital revolution with $35 tablet computer).
Aakash has been called a pathbreaking product and the cheapest tablet in the world at Rs3,000, and the company was hopeful of reducing the cost a little lower as sales ramp up over the next year, Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said.
He said that the tablet could become a little cheaper in the coming year and more features can be added to it every six months.
