Indian PC market grew 13 % in the third quarter of 2011" Gartner

The personal computer market, both desk-based and mobile PC, in India grew 13 per cent in the third quarter of 2011, compared with the same period a year ago, according to a study by information technology research and advisory company Gartner.

"This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market which grew 29 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2011,'' said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.

''A number of festivals helped drive demand in the consumer market in India. The third quarter was the best quarter in the history of the Indian PC industry as overall PC shipments crossed 3 million units for the first time. The consumer segment accounted for 55 per cent of PC shipments,'' he said.

All the major multinational PC vendors experienced double-digit growth in PC shipments in the third quarter of 2011.

In the reporting period, multinational brands contributed more than half of the total PC shipments with Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo being the top four vendors, representing a 51.1 per cent of the market share.

Local vendor HCL accounted for 5.6 per cent of PC shipments in the third quarter of 2011. It was the only vendor in top 5 to register a year-on-year decline in shipments in the third quarter.

"However, we need to be cautious and should not expect the same success to be replicated in the fourth quarter. After the post-festive season there will be sluggishness in the market,'' Tripathi said.
