Bangalore firm offers Android-based tablet at Rs4,500

Lakshmi Access Communications Systems (LACS), a little known firm in Bangalore, is offering a tablet PC at roughly Rs4,500 ($99), upping the ante in a market where service providers are wooing customers with low-priced products.

Lakshmi Access Communications Systems has launched four variants of its Magnum brand - Pepper, Tamarind, Mirchi and Paprika - all based on Google Android operating system.

Magnum 'Pepper', a sub-Rs5,000 entry-level tablet, comes with a 7-inch screen, 800 MHz processor, 4GB RAM, has wi-fi connectivity (3G dongle connectivity) and runs Android 2.2. It is manufactured in China.

"We have made it affordable, we have ensured it fits the pocket," Mahendraa Kumar Jain, the company's managing director, said.

These tablets are available in multiple display sizes of 7", 8" and 10".

Lakshmi Access plans to also produce and sell tablets priced up to Rs35,000 ($799), he said, adding the company has plans to open outlets around the country to sell these devices.
