Asus unveils Padfone and several innovative products

Taiwanese electronics major, Asus unveiled a new product called the Padfone and several other innovations including the UX series ultraportanbles and N series notebooks at Computex 2011 in Taipei.

The Padfone combines the functionality of an Android smartphone with an Android tablet and is expected to hit the market by Christmas. It comprises an Android smartphone that sits inside a tablet device. The tablet comes with a larger screen, stereo speakers and an extended battery with the operating system and core being powered by the smartphone.

According to the company the OS, with the phone in place, the OS can move seamlessly between the phone and the tablet enabling users to eliminate data transfer since the information stored in the smartphone simply moves to the tablet screen with the phone docked.

The arrangement also supports the smartphone's cellular capabilities without the need for a second SIM card or data subscription.

The company did not reveal more details and analysts say the cost of the duo would be a significant determining factor when it comes to sales.

Also announced were UX Series ultraportables crafted out of light aluminium alloy shell with  a unique 'spun' finish on polished surfaces. Measuring a mere 17mm at its thickest point, the needle-thin UX Series nonetheless packs impressive specifications, with the latest 2nd generation Intel Core mobile processors up to the powerful i7, SATA 6Gb/s solid-state drives.
